"But are they safe?"

Thus was the question posed by myself to Baron while we were walking from the recent McCain-Palin rally in Cedarburg, WI. We passed this Smart Car and I took a very-slightly off-center picture of it. Baron raves about the gas mileage, yet I cannot bring myself to think more of it than a giant bicycle. This article sways me ever-so-barely.

As for safety, the ForTwo did well enough in crash tests by the independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) to earn the group’s highest rating—five tars—thanks to the car’s steel racecar-style frame and liberal use of high-tech front and side airbags. Despite such good safety performance for such a tiny car, IIHS testers caution that larger, heavier cars are inherently safer than smaller ones.

I would still not buy one.

  1. It only gets like 45 to 50 mpg. If you are going to look that gay and potentially put your life in danger by driving this aluminum can on wheels, it should get at least 70 to 75. Then the payoff of your life for gas milage would be worth it.
